Seoul on a Student Budget: Eat, Travel & Have Fun for Less

April 15, 2026

Seoul has a reputation — often well-earned — for being a city that rewards frugality. If you know where to look, you can eat well, travel extensively, and have an extraordinary social life for significantly less money than in comparable global cities. Here's the honest breakdown of where your won actually goes.

Food: The Best Value in Any World City

Korean food culture is structurally generous to people on tight budgets. A 김밥 (kimbap) roll costs ₩1,000–₩2,000. A bowl of sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew) with rice is ₩7,000–₩9,000 and genuinely filling. University cafeterias (학생식당) typically offer full meals for ₩4,000–₩6,500 — some of the cheapest and highest-quality institutional food in the world.

Budget framework:

  • University cafeteria: ₩4,000–₩6,500/meal
  • Neighbourhood Korean restaurant: ₩7,000–₩12,000/meal
  • Convenience store meal (triangle kimbap + ramyeon): ₩3,500–₩5,000
  • Delivery app meal: ₩9,000–₩15,000 (watch the delivery fees)
  • Coffee at a local café: ₩3,500–₩5,500 (Starbucks: ₩6,500+)

The key insight: Korean convenience stores (편의점) are genuinely good for meals, not just snacks. A properly assembled convenience store breakfast — triangle kimbap, a container of tteokbokki, and a barista-style coffee — costs under ₩5,000 and is surprisingly satisfying.

Transportation: Embarrassingly Cheap

Seoul's public transit system is one of the best in the world, and it costs almost nothing. A single subway trip anywhere within the city costs ₩1,250–₩1,550 (about $1 USD). Load a T-Money card with ₩50,000 and it'll last weeks of daily use.

For day trips outside Seoul: intercity buses from Express Bus Terminal (고속버스터미널) reach Busan in 4 hours for ₩22,000–₩28,000. The KTX high-speed train to Busan is faster (2.5 hours) at around ₩59,800 standard fare — still reasonable by global standards. Book KTX seats via the Korail app at least a few days in advance for good seats.

Nightlife: Know the Formats

Korean nightlife is structured differently from Western models, which changes the economics entirely:

  • Norebang (노래방): Private karaoke rooms rented by the hour. Split 6 ways, a two-hour session costs each person ₩5,000–₩8,000. This is how Koreans socialise, and it's genuinely one of the best nights you'll have.
  • Chimaek (치맥): Fried chicken + beer. Order delivery or go to a 호프 (hof). A full spread for 4 people runs ₩40,000–₩60,000 total.
  • 편의점 nighting: Buying drinks from a convenience store and sitting at the outdoor tables is completely normal and socially acceptable. Cost: ₩3,000–₩5,000 per person.
  • Clubs in Hongdae: Entry is often free before midnight, ₩10,000–₩20,000 after with one drink included.

Monthly Budget Estimates

Category Tight Comfortable
Housing (furnished) ₩650,000 ₩1,000,000
Food ₩250,000 ₩450,000
Transport ₩50,000 ₩80,000
Social / Entertainment ₩100,000 ₩300,000
Phone ₩30,000 ₩55,000
Total ~₩1,080,000 ~₩1,885,000

Seoul rewards intentional spending. The students who run out of money here are usually those who shop at Gangnam boutiques, eat at western restaurants, and take taxis everywhere. The students who thrive financially are those who lean into Korean culture — which happens to be delicious, fun, and affordable.
