The Han River: Seoul's Outdoor Living Room

2026년 3월 3일

The Han River (한강) runs through the heart of Seoul for 41.5km, and the 12 parks that line its banks are where Seoul's residents collectively exhale. On a weekend afternoon in warm weather, the Han River parks host an extraordinary cross-section of city life: groups barbecuing under bridge shadows, couples cycling the riverside paths, elderly men fishing patiently while teenagers film themselves doing tricks on rollerblades. It's free, it's beautiful, and it's one of the defining experiences of living in Seoul.

The Best Parks by Personality

Yeouido Hangang Park (여의도 한강공원)

The most famous and most visited Han River park — for good reason. In spring it hosts the cherry blossom festival; in summer the lawn fills with family picnics and couples on rental bikes; in autumn the golden reeds along the water's edge are striking. The convenience store here (GS25) is legendarily good — they stock the full chimaek (chicken and beer) delivery set and rent bikes, inner tubes, and camping chairs. Best reached from Yeouinaru Station (Line 5), Exit 2 or 3.

Ttukseom Hangang Park (뚝섬 한강공원)

Ttukseom is the young crowd's park — slightly east of central Seoul, with water sports rentals (kayaks, water slides in summer), an outdoor swimming pool (₩5,000 in summer), and a beach volleyball court. It's also where Seoul's river swimming culture is most visible — a tradition the city has been gradually encouraging after decades of restriction. Nearest: Ttukseom Resort Station (Line 7), Exit 2.

Banpo Hangang Park (반포 한강공원)

Banpo is where you go for the Moonlight Rainbow Fountain — a 570m-long fountain mounted on both sides of the Banpo Bridge that puts on illuminated shows after sunset (April–October, typically 7:30 PM and 9 PM; check the Seoul city website for exact times). The park itself is well-designed and popular with runners; the 세빛섬 (Floating Islands) light installation is visible from the bank. Best reached from Express Bus Terminal Station (Lines 3/7/9), Exit 8.

Mangwon Hangang Park (망원 한강공원)

The hip neighbourhood choice — Mangwon is more local and less touristy than Yeouido. The view north toward the mountains is better here, and the park is a natural extension of Mangwon-dong's weekend market culture. On Saturdays, many residents cycle from the market to the river for the afternoon. Less crowded than Yeouido on summer weekends.

Cycling the Han River

Seoul has an excellent dedicated cycling path running the full 41.5km length of the Han River on both north and south banks. The path is flat, well-maintained, and separated from vehicle traffic. Bike rentals are available at all major parks:

  • Seoul Bike (따릉이) — the city's public bike share; ₩1,000 for 1 hour, ₩2,000 for a full day; requires app registration
  • Park rental stations — available at all major parks; ₩3,000–₩5,000/hour for standard bikes
  • Electric bikes — available at some parks; ₩5,000–₩8,000/hour; easier for longer distances

A popular half-day route: Yeouido → Mapo Bridge → Mangwon Park → back via the north bank. About 20km round trip, flat throughout, with convenience stores every few kilometres.

The Picnic Culture

Han River picnicking is a high art in Seoul. The standard setup: a waterproof mat (available from Daiso for ₩3,000), convenience store chimaek delivery (order via Baemin; GS25 and CU both deliver to GPS coordinates within the parks), and enough people to justify the purchase minimum. Food delivery directly to GPS location in Han River parks is a service that exists and works flawlessly — it is one of the small modern miracles of Seoul.

Barbecuing is permitted in designated zones (marked with 바비큐장 signs) at most parks. Charcoal grills are available to rent at the park convenience stores for ₩3,000–₩5,000, with charcoal and tongs. The meat comes from 마트 (mart) or can be ordered by delivery. A Han River barbecue at sunset, surrounded by the city skyline, is one of the best evenings Seoul offers — and it costs about ₩15,000 per person.
