Cherry Blossom Season in Seoul: Timing, Spots & What to Expect

2026년 1월 28일

Cherry blossom season (벚꽃 시즌, beotkkot season) is the single most talked-about natural event on the Korean calendar — and it's even more spectacular in person than the photographs suggest. If your exchange semester overlaps with late March or April, plan your schedule around it. Here's everything you need to know to experience it properly.

When Does It Happen?

Seoul's cherry blossoms typically peak between late March and early April, though the exact window shifts by a week or two depending on the year's winter temperature. The Korea Meteorological Administration publishes bloom forecasts starting in February — bookmark their site (weather.go.kr) or follow Korean weather apps for real-time updates.

The bloom window is brief: peak blooms last roughly 5–7 days before petals begin falling. The "falling petal" phase (낙화, nakwa) — where pink snow covers the streets — lasts another few days and is arguably more beautiful. The entire season, from first buds to bare branches, spans about three weeks.

The Best Spots in Seoul

Yeouido (여의도) — The Famous One

Yeouido's cherry blossom festival draws millions of visitors each year and is exactly as crowded as that sounds. The 1.7km boulevard of cherry trees along the Han River bank is genuinely breathtaking — and in 2025, the city opened the famous 'Cherry Blossom Road' to vehicle traffic again, changing the experience slightly. Go early morning (before 8 AM) or evening (after 7 PM) to see it without the worst of the crowds. Avoid weekends entirely unless you enjoy the festival chaos, which many people do.

Seokchon Lake (석촌호수) — The Instagram Favourite

Seokchon Lake in Songpa-gu is ringed by cherry trees that reflect perfectly in the lake's still surface. The loop around the lake is about 2.5km and is best done at dusk when the light turns amber. It's crowded but the setting is so inherently beautiful that the people become part of the scene rather than a distraction.

Korea University's Campus — The Local Secret

KU's Gothic red-brick buildings with cherry blossoms is one of Seoul's most striking but least-visited spring images. Students there treat blooms as simply the backdrop for their semester — you'll find people studying on blankets under the trees. The campus is open to visitors.

Namsan Mountain Trail

The hiking path up Namsan Mountain to N Seoul Tower passes through cherry groves that bloom slightly later than city-level trees (altitude matters). The climb takes 40–60 minutes from Myeongdong; the view of cherry-covered Seoul from the tower base is extraordinary.

Gyeongui Line Forest Park (경의선숲길)

A converted railway corridor running through Mapo-gu, this 6.3km linear park passes through cherry tunnels in spring. Far less crowded than Yeouido, excellent for cycling (rentals available at the park), and lined with good cafés and wine bars for when you want to sit down and actually enjoy the view.

What Koreans Actually Do During Blossom Season

The Korean answer to cherry blossoms is a 꽃놀이 (kkotnori) — literally "flower play." This means: find a tree, spread a mat, open food and drink, and stay for several hours. It's picnicking elevated to a cultural ritual. Convenience stores near blossom spots stock specifically for the occasion — chimaek (fried chicken + beer) delivery to the park is completely normal.

If you're joining Korean friends for kkotnori, contribute to the food, bring a blanket, and don't rush it. This is one of those experiences that Korean students plan weeks in advance and remember for years.

Day Trip: Jinhae (진해)

If cherry blossoms are important enough to make it the focus of your trip, consider a day trip to Jinhae in South Gyeongsang Province. The Gunhangje Cherry Blossom Festival held annually in late March/early April is built around the country's most concentrated cherry blossom grove — 360,000 trees lining every street of this small naval city. Take an early morning KTX to Changwon, then a bus or taxi to Jinhae. It's a 3-hour journey each way and worth every minute.
